Projects in Sound and Radio

Memoriav supports projects to save audio recordings before they decay or players disappear. The objective is to make these recordings accessible to the public.

In this way, we have been able to save important radio recordings made between 1933 and 1950 in collaboration with SRG since 1993. These direct-to-disc recordings made of metal and glass have a thin coating of shellac, which makes them decay as they age.

Today, the many format types of audio recordings are at the centre of the measures. In an entire series of projects, teams are transforming audio recordings from ethnological and musical research or voices of important persons into computer-readable files. The approximately ½ million tapes in the archives at SRG are also being transmitted onto hard drives and data storage tapes, making them accessible in a few seconds. For journalists, this online archive is a fundamental novelty, as they are able to reuse audio files from the archives in the shortest possible time. Digitisation also has the advantage of allowing researchers and the interested public to listen to old recordings without any danger of the recordings being worn out or destroyed.

In addition to the digitisation of the recordings, Memoriav’s projects also ensure these contemporary audio witnesses are catalogued in good quality, which also makes them easy to find and accessible.
