Technology

Today, digital technology also dominates audiovisual information:

Photographs, sound recordings and videos are created almost exclusively using digital technology, and analogue collections are being digitised in great numbers. One exception is film, because the great volume of data created by high-resolution digitisation remains difficult to master.

From the viewpoint of the preservation of Switzerland’s audiovisual heritage, two main basic problems arise from the digitisation of records: data-reduced formats, in which a significant amount of audiovisual information is lost, and the instability of technical norms and standards. In addition, the information value of the analogue audiovisual recording cannot be completely played back digitally in most cases.

However, how digital information is handled plays a central role in the preservation of audiovisual records. The following is a list of selected links regarding storage media and long-term digital archiving.
It also offers information on projects and developments in photography, film, sound/radio and video/TV.
